Meet Steph + Katie
Steph Burlton
Katie Burlton
We’re Steph + Katie, a child-free, millennial couple from Canada. We started dating back in 2011, and have been married since 2015. We currently split our time between Vancouver and the Southern Gulf Islands, when we’re not adventuring around the globe!
Hi, I’m Steph! I’m the brunette, and the original Burlton in our little family. I’m a pretty typical Aries, I have a lot of different interests, and I’ve never met a problem I couldn’t solve. I’m the overall tech expert in our business (and our life), and I love doing our “behind the camera” work.
I’m a dual citizen of Canada and the UK, and I grew up just outside Vancouver. I completed my last 2 years of high school in Boston, and earned my university degree in film and communications in upstate New York. After graduating, I played professional ice hockey back home in BC, and represented Team Canada in field lacrosse. I’ve always been in love with the arts, and equally in love with sports. My athletics background led me to work as a strength and conditioning coach for elite athletes, and a professional women’s ice hockey coach, while my interest in the arts took me to pastry school and to work as a photographer and videographer.
I was lucky enough to travel a lot with my family when I was young, and I’ve always been interested in exploring the world. Right before meeting Katie, I took a solo, 3 month backpacking trip around South America. I’ve never wanted a conventional lifestyle or a “regular job”, so travelling and running a creative business with my wife is basically my dream life. When I’m not working on our biz, you can find me making a perfect pour over, watching women’s sports, or planning the next project on our property.

Hi, I’m Katie! I’m the redhead (no it’s not my natural colour), and the newest Burlton in our family. I’m a very true Aquarius/Capricorn cusp, I’ve always been really creative, and I also love to plan and organize. I manage the backend of our business, and am our overall content director.
I grew up just outside Vancouver, and attended a fine arts school from an early age. I’ve always been interested in making art and telling stories, and I always knew I would grow up to be a creator of some kind. I fell completely in love with dance and music as a kid, and I trained as a high-level competitive dancer throughout my education. My passion for the performing arts then led me to a career in professional dance and modelling after graduating, and I worked as an artist and performer on stage, in print, and in the film and television industry for more than a decade in both Vancouver and Toronto.
I discovered my love for travel when I took my first overseas trip as a student. It was in Italy that I decided I wanted to live a big life, adventuring around the world. Growing up I knew my future was probably going to be unconventional, and when I met Steph and she became my first ever girlfriend, it all started to fall into place. I feel incredibly lucky and so grateful for this life we’ve built. When I’m not working on our business, you can find me whizzing up a breakfast smoothie, doing yoga, or planning out our next epic trip.

It’s a big priority for us, so we’ve designed our life in a way that allows for frequent travel. We make our own schedule, can work remotely, and have found lots of creative ways to make it more affordable. For example, we love “travel hacking” with airline points, and we frequently use HomeExchange for our accommodations!

Safety is definitely a major consideration for all queer travellers, but we have visited plenty of destinations where we have felt safe and welcomed as a lesbian couple. Researching the local laws, cultural norms, and public opinion of a place, helps us know whether or not we will feel comfortable travelling there.

We both have backgrounds in digital media, and when we started travelling full-time after our wedding, we dreamed about starting a creative business together. Sharing our trips on social media turned into building a community online, which has now led to some of the most amazing opportunities that we never could have imagined.

It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely worth it! So we remind ourselves that doing the not-so-fun parts, is the trade-off to getting to live this full and exciting life. There’s a lot of organization, life admin, and juggling that goes on behind the scenes, but we’ve gotten better at balancing it all over the years.

We have no problems functioning in a small space together, and our tiny house gives us the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful island property! We’re so proud of our home and all the work we’ve put into it, and it’s such a fun, and unique way of living.
